Alleged armed robber held at Main Big Lime granted bail

A man who allegedly escaped from police custody while on a robbery under arms charge and was captured at the Main Big Lime was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Dwayne Critchlow, 23, of Vigilance Squatting Area pleaded not guilty to escaping from lawful custody at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on November 6 last year he escaped from the Ruimveldt Police Station while being in lawful custody pending a robbery under arms charge.

Attorney-at-law Sonny Sarwan, who appeared for Critchlow, told the court that on November 6 his client was never in custody and that many persons may have the same name but differ in their features. He added that his client was picked up because it was believed that he was the one who was wanted but his client had never been charged or brought to the court for any offence.

Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews asked that bail be refused saying that the accused had several matters in another court and that before he was taken to Brickdam, while at another station, he jumped over a counter and got away. He added that Critchlow was picked up at the Main Big Lime on December 26 last year.

Critchlow stated that he does not have any matter in the court or with the police and has only been in the country for five months.

The magistrate granted bail and Critchlow’s matter was transferred to Court Two for March 15.
