Code of ethics set up for health professionals

Health professionals in Guyana will soon be bound by law to operate under a set of guidelines following government’s endorsement of a code of ethics governing their operations.

Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon said the resort to the code of ethics for health professionals is based on an initiative of the Health Ministry and would bring Guyana into conformity with other states’ conventions and modern practices.

As such, he noted that this group of professionals in each category would have a specific code of ethics under which their professional practices would be carried out.

The code is still a document and will have to win the approval of the National Assembly. No mention of when this will be done was made.

“Doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and radiographers, all would ultimately have to subscribe to a code of ethics which will pronounce on ethical considerations in their dealing with patients.”
