New Bourda garbage arrangements will not affect workers -City Hall

The Mayor and City Council on Friday officially announced that it has privatized garbage collection at Bourda Market, but that workers will not be made redundant.

A press release from the council’s Public Relations Officer Royston King said the council had always been interested in privatizing the clearance of refuse from its markets.

It said too that an assessment of the situation was done by the relevant committee and full council and it was agreed that Cevon’s Waste Management, with which it already has a contract, would be asked to submit a proposal to do a pilot at Bourda market.

The statement said the company submitted the proposal which was studied and accepted by the council which also agreed that the project take effect from January 2.

According to King, the project was discussed with the cleansing workers previously attached to the market and some of them were reassigned to other areas in the same department while others have chosen to work with the waste management company.

Special payment packages for those workers leaving the council to work with the company will be available within a few days, the council stated.
