Man charged with assaulting Japanese tourist

A man accused of indecently assaulting a tourist was released on bail when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Mark Anthony of 19 Bodd Street, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo pleaded not guilty to the indecent assault charge and was placed on $25,000 bail by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

It is alleged that Anthony indecently assaulted the woman last Thursday at Vergenoegen.

A man who said he was a tour operator told the court that the woman was a “visitor from Japan” and Anthony had offered compensation in the sum of $40,000 to the woman which she had accepted.

However the magistrate informed him that the virtual complainant would have to go to court and tell him that she didn’t want to offer any evidence. The man replied that he would inform her.

The magistrate then granted Anthony bail and set the matter for next Tuesday at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
