Man gets three years for cocaine in canister

Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan on Tuesday sentenced a man to three years imprisonment after he admitted to having 14 grammes of cocaine in a film canister.

According to the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court report Anthony Harris pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

On January 13, police conducted a search on Harris and found the narcotic.

Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the police were on duty in the Stabroek Market area when, acting on information, they searched Harris and found the drugs in a canister in his pocket. Harris was told of the offence and arrested.

In addition to the sentence, the man was also fined $10,000.
