NA man survives execution attempt at wake

A New Amsterdam resident who was shot around 11:40 pm on Thursday has to undergo surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his jaw.

Dorset McCammon, 26, of Lot 43 Stanleytown was shot while he was at a wake house two streets away and had to be rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday.

Stabroek News understands that the man was playing a game of dominoes when a lone gunman who had a cap pulled over his face walked up and pointed a gun to his head.

McCammon who apparently did not notice the gun, raised his head at the same time the gunman pulled the trigger. The bullet ended up hitting the left temple.

A woman who travelled from Georgetown for the wake that was kept in honour of her mother said the man fell to the ground unconscious and bleeding while the gunman calmly escaped.

She said everyone thought McCammon was dead but a few minutes later he got up and walked out of the yard.

The woman said at first when she heard the gunshot she thought it was a robbery. She is disturbed that the gunman chose her mother’s wake to carry out his act.

Meanwhile Marlyn McCammon, the injured man’s mother said just before midnight her son called out to her and said, “mommy, mommy, ah got shot in mi eyes.”

She said, “Some of his friends had run behind him. I called the taxi and I took him to the hospital.”

When this newspaper visited him at the hospital yesterday midday, his face was swollen and he was having difficulty talking and eating. (Shabna Ullah)
