The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) would be executing some 60 feet of emergency revetment work on the Boerasirie Water Conservancy to strengthen the structure.

A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said bids are being procured to facilitate construction of revetments at Warimia.

A special task force set up by government conducted similar works in 2005 and 2006 to repair, improve, and expand the national drainage and irrigation (D&I) system. The work is part of the government’s efforts to improve the D&I system in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara).

Last year the NDIA excavated sections of the drainage system in Canals Number One and Two Polder, West Bank Demerara while the regional administration carried out other work including installing a drainage pump, clearing of the A-line channel, which drains into the Demerara River, and repairing culverts and other D&I structures.

The Water Users Associations at Vreed-en-Hoop/La Jalousie, Canals Polder, and Vergenoegen/Naamryck are doing routine maintenance of the secondary drainage system in the region.

GINA said about $1.5B was spent in 2005 to undertake several D&I projects in various regions while an additional $1.4 was spent last year to further strengthen the D&I system.
