West Berbice students stung in attack by bees

Students and teachers of the Lachmansingh Primary School had to scamper for cover during last week when they were attacked by bees that are nested in a tyre between clumps of bushes on the school’s fence.

Some students were stung and were treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital and sent away. The bees were apparently disturbed and Stabroek News learnt that students ran into residents’ yard, screaming as teachers and other students diverted in different streets.

Teachers are asking that the region or the relevant authorities remove the bees early before the situation gets out of control.

Residents said a man who was attacked while riding his bicycle, dropped the bike and started rolling on the ground in pain. In another instance the bees attacked some cows and the owners had to soak the cows in water to get the bees off them.

According to them the tyre that the bees live in was left on the parapet after an excavator cleared the trench. They said the operator could have moved the tyre away but they are alleging that he pushed it in a corner and left it there instead.

Meanwhile two women from Bath Settlement had to be admitted at the Fort Wellington Hospital after they were attacked in separate incidents. Ramdai Matadin, 62, was attacked while picking carilla in her yard, while Shiroon Phillips, 43, was stung in the backdam where she had gone fishing with other persons.

Regional Chairman of Region Five Harrinarine Baldeo told Stabroek News when contacted that the Ministry of Agriculture in Georgetown promised to follow up on the situation.
