Defending drag racing champ to be hard-pressed Sunday

Defending champion Vivek Joshi will be hard pressed to come out on top on Sunday when the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMRSC) stages its drag racing season opener at the South Dakota Circuit, beginning at 1pm.

According to the event’s coordinator Raj Boodhoo, over 100 cars are expected to be on show in the five categories of races.

Boodhoo also told Stabroek Sport that initially five racers from Suriname had stated their intention of participating, but that figure has now doubled as ten have confirmed their participation.

With the Surinamese in addition to several seasoned local circuit racers, Joshi will have his hands full to stave off the challengers for the 2007 title.

Among the locals expected to give the defending champion who will compete with his Toyota Starlet with MRZ engine a run for his money are circuit racers Peter Morgan, Chet Singh, Kamal Seebarran and Rupi Shewjattan.

Morgan is a popular Group 2 racer who will be driving a Subaru Impreza, while Singh will be aboard a Honda Integra.

Seebarran will jostle for honours in his Mazda RX7, as will Seebarran.

Shewjattan also a popular Group 2 racer will be aboard a Toyota Starlet.

According to Boodhoo, the Dutch racers will be driving machines boosted with nitros fuel injected in the system, and this will make the machines go faster than with ordinary gas.

The categories to be contested are A – up to 1600cc; B – up to 2000cc; C – up to 2250cc; D – Open for all super cars and super bikes.

Registration starts at 11am at the South Dakota circuit.

Boodhoo said so far 75 cars have been confirmed but he is optimistic that more than 100 cars will be on show come Sunday.

He said also that the championship will be run on a round robin basis at first before the elimination round comes around.
