Man remanded on charges he stole from mother

Magistrate Fazil Azeez yesterday remanded to prison a man accused of stealing money from his mother.

According to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court reports Mohamed Shamon Ally, a construction worker of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, last Thursday, at the said location, allegedly stole $35,000 from his mother Zabeeda Khatoon Ally. Following police investigations the man was arrested and charged. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny.

Both of Ally’s parents testified that he had stolen the money. His frail-looking, emotional, elderly mother told the court that she left her shop for a little while and upon her return saw her son coming out of the shop with the purse that contained the money. Ally said she told her son to put the money back but he laughed and ran away. The woman said the money was intended for the poor.

Ally’s elderly father said a hire-car driver told him that when his son disembarked from the vehicle he took money from the purse to pay him.

In his defence Ally told the court that his mother was lying. “Sir, me ain’t tek de money, sir,” he said. He also said on the day in question he was in the company of a local official.

The magistrate ordered Ally to appear at court on January 9.
