An accident on the West Bank Demerara claimed the life of a primary school student who was crossing the public road there yesterday.

A police release last evening said seven-year-old Elizabeth McGowan, a student of La Retraite Primary School died after she was struck by a car.

The release said that the child who lived at Church Street, Stanleytown was crossing the road from west to east on a pedestrian crossing when she was struck down by motorcar HB 2704 driven by Jaichand Latchman, 27, of Canal #2 West Bank Demerara. The car was allegedly moving at high speed when the mishap occurred.

McGowan succumbed before receiving medical attention at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The driver is in the custody of the police and assisting with investigations.
