Region One road works to aid development

The road works recently undertaken in Region One will allow easy travel to and from communities in order to market farm produce and other activities that can generate income for hinterland areas.

A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said the works, funded by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) provides a road link from Matthews Ridge to Arakaka and Port Kaituma and other communities within the district. The GGMC also spent $260M in December to upgrade the road from Georgetown to Lethem and has budgeted about $1.6B for more hinterland road works which are expected to start soon.

Residents had earlier complained about the condition of the roadways as it impeded inter-community travel. However, the rehabilitative and construction works done will allow easy travel especially for miners, farmers, persons seeking educational opportunities and access to hospitals and other health care facilities.

GINA said in September President Bharrat Jagdeo had indicated that government intended to work towards opening the interior districts through developing transport facilities and other mechanisms to generate income.
