Dear Editor,

As a resident in Agriculture Road, Mon Repos I am concerned about the lack of street lamps. This is a very dark and dismal road at night and poses great danger to residents from thieves and bandits. It is also very difficult for security workers who work at nights at Nari and the Guyana School of Agriculture because on most occasions they have to walk out this long two mile road at night to reach the public road after work because of transportation problems at those late hours.

It is very dangerous for security workers and other workers such as cane cutters who have to go to work at night. Sometimes some very dangerous snakes such as labaria will be on this road at night and pose a threat to residents and children who walk in the dark to buy groceries from shops. Many residents who have to walk this road at night coming from work were robbed by bandits.

Not very long ago a dead man was found not far from GWI’s `Green Tank’ in the trench that leads down to the Agriculture School, until now no one can tell who killed the man or how he ended up in the trench because the place is pitch black at night. Bandits escape quickly in the dark in bushes and even on the road they can just walk away and not be seen.

I am calling on GPL to install street lights on these vacant posts as early as possible.

I also note with interest that GWI ran water lines in Agriculture Road,which is a good venture. We were getting water for two hours in the morning, but for the past three weeks no water has been provided to residents in this road and no explanation has been given. We need water all the time, not two hours per day.
