Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament

The two finalists in the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament will be decided this evening at the GFC ground where an explosive double header is carded.

In the feature game billed for an 8pm start, the ongoing rivalry will unfold between Georgetown and East Coast as Pele of Georgetown tackles Victoria Kings, while from 6pm, defending champions Fruta Conquerors of Georgetown face Linden’s Bakewell Topp XX.

With the four semi-finalists all in pursuit of the coveted winner’s prize worth $500,000 and the Mayor’s trophy, football fans can expect an evening of entertaining football with intense rivalry.

Strikers Nigel `Powers’ Codrington and Gregory `Jackie Chan’ Richardson, both national players and arguably the best striking combination at club level, lead the powerful Pele line-up. They are expected to get valuable support from midfielders Konata Mannings and Travis `Zorro’ Grant.

Shemroy Arthur will perform duties between the uprights and he is expected to get defensive support from central defenders Dirk Archer and Solomon Austin.

Victoria Kings, fresh from a morale-boosting, come-from-behind 2-1 quarter-final victory over Western Tigers, are confident of repeating a similar feat and will be relying on the upfront combination of Pierre Joseph and Rashleigh Morrison to lead the challenge.

Tichard Joseph and Andrew Holder are expected to be supportive at midfield.

Doing duties between the uprights is custodian Andrew Durant, while the defence will be marshalled by Victor Williams and Ron Collin.

Delon Williams, Elroy Parks, Seon Hescott and Neville Stanton will form the core of Fruta Conquerors’ line-up, while Collie Hercules, Marlon Benjamin, Kevin Beaton and Kayode McKinnon are expected to respond for Topp XX who edged Alpha United 4-3 in their quarter- final fixture on Sunday.

Over $850,000 in cash incentives, trophies and individual prizes, compliments of Jailing Motor Trading, AH&L Kissoon and Keishar’s are up for grabs. The competition will conclude on Sunday at the same venue with the third place play-off and the final.
