Girl, two, drowns in trench at Buxton

A mother is in grief after her two-year-old daughter yesterday afternoon fell overboard and drowned while going to a Strathspey, East Coast Demerara (ECD) shop to purchase a pack of biscuits.

Dead is Smanlia Glenn of Strathspey Squatting Area, ECD. Stabroek News was told that the child’s mother Corletta Glenn left the child in the care of another relative and went out. Around 3 pm yesterday, the caretaker said, the child left the house to purchase a pack of biscuits, while she lay asleep in the house. On her way to the shop, the child stumbled and fell overboard in a trench.

No one recognized what had happened and it was not until much later that the caretaker realized the child had not returned and went looking for her. She found the baby in trench and rushed her to the Georgetown Public Hospital where the child was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police were called in and are investigating the incident.
