The battle for supremacy in the 2007 Annual National Sports Commission (NSC) table tennis championships continues today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with play in the doubles competition.

National table tennis coach, Linden Johnson, told Stabroek Sport that up to midday yesterday, defending men’s doubles champions Christopher Franklin and Paul Meusa had not registered to compete in today’s event which starts at 4pm.

“Meusa and Franklin have not registered as yet. Maybe they will by this afternoon but the tournament is wide open,” Johnson said, adding that the event will be highly competitive, whoever competes.

Up to midday yesterday, newly crowned men’s singles champion, Dwain Dick, had teamed up with over-50 singles champion Colin France to contest the men’s doubles event.

Johnson said that he was sure about the participation of Lisa Lewis in the defending women’s doubles team but her teammate Rhonda Farley’s participation was in doubt.

However, Ambrose Thomas and 2006 Junior Sportswoman of the Year Trenace Lowe have teamed up to contest the women’s doubles competition, while Natalie Cummings and Michelle John have also formed a unit for that category.

Defending senior mixed doubles champions, Andrew Daly and Lowe, while not registered up to press time yesterday, are expected to defend their title against strong opponents today.

The doubles tournament is expected to bring the curtain down on the 2007 instalment of the annual tournament. The grand finale is scheduled for Friday at 6pm at the host venue.
