Pele Football Club took the `lion’s share’ of prizes in the just-concluded Mayor’s Cup knockout football tournament coordinated by Lennox Arthur.

Apart from winning the $500,000 first prize, players from the team also won the highest goal-scorer, the best defender and the best goal keeper awards.

Nigel `Powers’ Codrington, who scored six goals in the tournament, won the highest goal-scorer award while Shemroy Arthur and Solomon Austin were adjudged best goal-keeper and best defender respectively.

Codrington received a Jailing motorcycle, compliments of Jailing Motor Company while Arthur was the recipient of a four-burner gas stove, compliments of Keishar’s who was represented by Alphonso Skepmire.

Austin, on the other hand, is to receive one bed from AH&L Kissoon.

Pele defeated Fruta Conquerors 2-1 in the final on Sunday night while Bakewell Topp XX beat Victoria Kings 3-0 in the third place play-off.

City mayor, Hamilton Green, in whose office the presentation ceremony was held, extended congratulations to all the teams that participated in the tournament as well as Arthur and his organizing committee.

He explained that he was unable to witness the final since he was overseas and returned to the country very late Sunday night.

Sydroy Nedd, a member of the organizing committee, thanked all the teams that participated and hailed the tournament a success. He noted that it was completed in a very short period, unlike other years and expressed the hope that next year’s tournament will attract more professional players.

The mayor, who assisted with the presentation of prizes, disclosed that an All Star team comprising players who participated in the tournament will be selected to go to Cuba for a Goodwill tournament.

He said the Cubans were expecting the All Stars team today. However, there were some problems with flight arrangements as well as identifying someone who can speak Spanish to accompany the team.

According to Green, the flight problem was sorted out yesterday, but he is still seeking to get someone who can speak Spanish to accompany the team.

Arthur, who will be accompanying the team as manager could not say when the team would be leaving for Cuba.

Pele won the first prize worth $500,000 and the Mayor’s trophy, while Fruta Conquerors received the $200,000 second prize money along with a trophy.

The third and fourth-placed teams, Bakewell Topp XX and Victoria Kings, received $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
