West Berbice primary schools take Mash to the streets

Students and teachers of Lachmansingh Primary School at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice on Thursday had a “ball” as they tramped behind a music system through the village to celebrate Mashramani.

Headmistress Gertrude James said in keeping with the theme, ‘A Cultural Invasion in 2007′, they chose to dress in the national colours.

After the parade, students returned to school and continued the celebration and were given a special treat.

James said the school took part in the float, calypso, poetry and dance in the Regional Children’s Cos-tume Competition and copped six first prizes, two second prizes and one third prize. Students displayed two Costumes: ‘Solar Power in the 5-7 category’ and ‘VAT Invasion in the 8-10 category.’

Other schools, including Belladrum Primary also held their parade on Thursday. Students and teachers of Belladrum marched from Weldaad to the school where they concluded the event with a cultural programme.
