Speedboat bandits grab $8M from Esso

Armed bandits operating with a speedboat robbed the Esso service station main terminal at Providence, East Bank Demerara on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports from the police, the bandits escap-ed with around $8 million on Tuesday afternoon after tying up the security guards and staff.

The bandits, who were armed with handguns, confronted the guards on duty at the wharf, tied them up and then proceeded to the office area where the employees were forced to lie face down on the floor. They, too, were tied up at this point and the cashier was forced to hand over the cash. The bandits escaped via the Demerara River in a speedboat that was waiting on them.

With world cup cricket scheduled for Providence later this month, Tuesday’s robbery is not good news for the security sector.
