The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) commenced their Toucan Industries Inc. Mashramani Junior Squash tournament at the Georgetown Club on Tuesday night with some interesting matches.

Eight groups of qualifying matches were played as well as first round group matches.

In the qualifiers, Ashley De Groot defeated Shaquille Bowen 9/0, 9/0 while Steven Xavier defeated Brandon Bento 9/1, 9/2.

Mary Fung-A-Fat defeated Abhishek Singh 9/0, 9/3 and 9/3 while Victoria Arjoon defeated Lee Fung-A-Fat 9/1, 10/9 and 9/2.

Jason Ray Khalil defeated Kayla Jeffrey who retired from the match with the score being 9-6, 2-3 while Ashley Khalil defeated Nicholas Narain 9/3, 9/2, 5/9, 0/9, 9/5.

In category ‘A’ Alex Arjoon defeated Raphael De Groot 9/7, 9/5, 9/2 while Deje Dias defeated Javed Rahaman 9/6, 6/9, 9/6, 3/9, 9/7 and Peter De Groot defeated Oliver Kear 8/10, 9/3, 6/9, 9/3, 9/2.

The `B’ category served off with Diana King defeating Robert Hiscock 9/0, 9/4, 9/4 while in the `C’ category Alysa Xavier received a walk-over from Dominique Dias.

In the `D’ category Nyron Joseph defeated Jean-Claude Jeffrey 9/5, 8/10, 8/10, 9/2 and 9/1.

The players were grouped according to skill level into five different categories ranging from the A category of accomplished junior national players to the E category for novices. Each category will play a round robin to determine the winner.

The tournament is scheduled to continue until the final round on Saturday evening which will be followed by the presentation ceremony.
