Annual National Youth & Junior Championships, March 8 & 9 at Enmore

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will stage its Annual National Youth and Junior Championships on March 8 and 9 at the Enmore Community Centre ground beginning at 10am.

These championships will be used as criteria for selecting Youth/Junior athletes for international competitions during the year.

The events to be contested are 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000-metre track races for boys and girls under-17 years of age as well as long jump, shot-put, discus and javelin field events.

Girls and boys under-20 years of age will contest the 100, 200, 400, 800, 5,000 and 10,000-metre track races as well as the long jump, shot-put, discus and javelin field events.

The under-17 athletes will not be allowed to compete in the under-20 age group.

According to a release, subject to the restrictions set out above, competitors will be allowed to compete in any number of events and clubs and schools may enter any number of athletes in an event. Competitors for the long jump and throws will be given four trials.

The top three athletes in each event will receive awards.

While registration closed yesterday, late entries will be accepted up to 5pm on Monday on payment of a late fee of $500 per athlete in addition to the entry fee.

The rules of the IAAF in accordance with the IAAF Handbook 2006-2007 edition will be used. No event will be held with less than three competitors.

Additionally, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony has accepted the invitation to be Patron of the event and so he will deliver the address and declare the activity open.

Meanwhile, all affiliated clubs/schools are invited to a meeting on Monday at Olympic House at 10am. Among the matters to be discussed are the new IAAF’s coaching structure, affiliation and registration, national youth regulations and an update on doping control.
