Odeen Ishmael would be a good president

Dear Editor,

Great leaders are born, they are not made, and we are seeing the evidence of this in our country today. Don’t get me wrong, President Bharrat Jagdeo is a leader of vision, commitment and energy.

He has already surpassed Hoyte and the great Cheddi combined in the development he has brought to Guyana. But yet there is something missing. Our young leader is too rash and too quick to quarrel.

We have seen this with the Stabroek News, with Cde Janet, with the private sector and with the churches on the casino issue. Gone is the maturity and the level-headedness which we are accustomed to seeing in our leaders.President Jagdeo is best suited for the position of Finance Minister.

If he returns to that post it would be best for the country because he can do what he does best – micro manage the economy to produce the most development.

For his replacement we need someone who is an articulate intellectual, who will not engage in these pointless quarrels. No one fits the bill better than Dr Odeen Ishmael. Ambassador Ishmael is a dynamic orator and a diplomat par excellence.

It was wrong in the first place to demote Ambassador Ishmael from his prestigious Washington post. It is time this respected diplomat takes his rightful place in this country. If Guyana and the PPP are led by a pious and distinguished individual like Ambassador Ishmael, Guyana’s image will improve and there will be no limit to our progress.

Yours faithfully,

Azad Baksh
