A taxi driver accused of robbing a woman at knifepoint of her gold jewellery was yesterday granted $40,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Junior Niles called `Talk Out’, 48, of 65 James and Campbell streets, Albouystown pleaded not guilty to armed robbery.

It is alleged that on March 1 at Ruimveldt being armed with a knife he robbed Salika Kandhaya of a gold chain, gold band and two gold rings, all to the total value of $62,000.

Attorney-at-law Frank Fraser who represented Niles told the court that his client who is a taxi driver was stopped on his way to base by a passenger at Carnegie School of Home Economics on High Street.

He stated that Niles dropped the passenger off in Albouystown and subsequently he found out that there had been a robbery and the passenger was the suspect.

Fraser stated that Niles cooperated with the police and took them to where he had dropped off the passenger but that individual had already fled the scene and his client was charged.

He asked for reasonable bail and said “if he had stayed quiet he would not have been charged.”

His case was transferred to Court Three for April 16.
