A Linden man who allegedly had over five kilos of cannabis when he was searched by police at a roadblock on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway was yesterday refused bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan.

Garland Pellew, 46, of 13 Amelia’s Ward, Linden pleaded not guilty to the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on March 5 at Madewini, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, Pellew had 5 kg 700 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking. According to the facts of the case Pellew was in a mini-bus headed to Georgetown when the vehicle was stopped at a police roadblock. A search was carried out and the drugs were discovered in two haversacks which Pellew was carrying.

Attorney-at-law Mark Waldron represented Pellew and asked the court for the earliest date for the commencement of the trial. Waldron stated that he believes there are several challenging issues that the prosecution will have to face as it relates to his client.

Pellew’s case was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for March 9 for report and fixture.
