A man who allegedly threatened another with a firearm was yesterday refused bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Marlon Alleyne, 39, of 6 Werk-en-Rust pleaded not guilty to two unlawful possession, assault and threatening language charges.

It is alleged that on March 10 at Georgetown he had in his possession one .32 Rossi revolver and three .32 live rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence. He also allegedly on the same day at Durban and Henry streets unlawfully assaulted and threatened Keith Hughes.

Appearing on Alleyne’s behalf was attorney-at-law Mark Waldron who told the court that his client owns his own property at Werk-en-Rust and has been gainfully employed for over ten years at Silvie’s General Store. He stated that at no time was a firearm or ammunition found on Alleyne’s person. While admitting that the two men did have an altercation, the counsel said that at some time some firearm threat was made but he did not say by whom. The police, he said, were called in and they found no firearm on his client. At the station, the attorney said, the police claimed that they found a firearm a short distance away. He concluded that apart from what was said by the virtual complainant the police had no other evidence. He asked the magistrate to exercise his discretion and grant Alleyne bail.

Police prosecutor Maxine Graham asked that bail be refused.

Alleyne will return to court on Friday.
