First sugar crop target set at 99,500 tonnes

The sugar production target for the first crop this year is 99,500 tonnes, a 10% increase over last year.

Operations Director Paul Worthington was quoted in the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) newsletter for November 2006 to January 2007 as saying that, “The proof is in the amount of canes available, the readiness of the factories and, most importantly, our own commitment towards making the crop a successful one.”

Grinding for the first crop commenced on February 3, and will last for some 13 weeks.

The newsletter stated that the sugar production for 2006 was recorded as 259,549 tonnes – some 13,000 tonnes more than the target. This comprised the first crop’s total of 90,352 tonnes and the 169,197 tonnes of sugar for the second crop.

Berbice estates contributed 62% of the industry’s total production, with Skeldon Estate achieving 28,590 tonnes. The East Berbice estates contribution neared 100,000 tonnes following Albion’s 61,227 tonne and Rose Hall’s 36,237 tonnes. Blairmont secured 34,370 tonnes for the year.

In the Demerara region, where the remaining 99,125 tonnes of sugar was recorded, Enmore’s total was 29,982 and the highest. Sister location LBI followed with 27,312 tonnes, while for West Demerara estates, Wales bagged 21,731 tonnes and Uitvlugt followed with 20,999 tonnes. Total sugar sales in the year 2006 were 262,137 tonnes and the 37,824 tonnes of molasses produced was sold locally and to countries in Caricom.
