Preparations have begun for the construction of the approach road to the Berbice River Bridge a few days after the contract was signed at a cost of US$8.7 million.

The work is being undertaken by Dipcon and an official told this newspaper that they have already cut down the trees, using chainsaws. He said they are currently clearing out these away and are stockpiling materials while the surveyors are laying out the project.

He also stated that chainsaw operators and labourers are clearing the bush on the Crab Island side, which would stretch for 3,100 metres. The road at D’ Edward would be 700 metres long.

All of the houses, save for one, have been relocated to a scheme established by government at Number Two Village, while some residents opted to purchase land elsewhere.

Stabroek News was told the last resident was awaiting a plot of land from government before dismantling and removing his house.
