The owner of a Chinese restaurant was shot last night in what appeared to be a failed robbery bid and he was reported to be in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

The man, Yun-Sun Chen, was shot in his hip at his Hadfield and Louisa Row restaurant around 8 o’clock last night. According to reports, the man was in his restaurant, Carrifour, when two men approached him and requested food.

Two customers, who were in the restaurant at the time, said that they were having a conversation and noticed when two men entered the shop but they heard no demands being made.

They said when they knew something was amiss was when a shot was fired and they saw the men exiting the restaurant.

However, a young woman who was sitting outside of the restaurant said she heard one of the men saying, “Gimme it, gimme it.” It is believed that Yun may not have understood what the man was saying and was shot as he made no attempt to hand over money. Stabroek News was told that the two men went to the restaurant in a green car, which also had two other occupants. They fled in the car after the shooting.

Residents were shocked over the incident and said no one from the area would ever attack Yun and his family – he has a wife and two daughters – and called the bandits cruel. It was obvious that the man and his family are well liked in the neighbourhood as a number of residents flocked the hospital to ensure that the man was okay. His wife and two daughters were crying and were being comforted by relatives and friends.

The police are investigating.
