Police warn against drivers not observing sirens

The Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is urging more vigilance from road users as it relates to their response to police and fire service sirens.

The police in a statement made reference to order regulation 4 (1) and (2) which note: “every vehicle shall, upon the approach of a vehicle of the Fire Service, or an approved police vehicle, stop as near as possible to the left side of the road and during the hour of darkness , dip or dim its lights and remain stationary until the vehicle of the fire service of approved police vehicle has passed.”

The police have also reminded that every vehicle traveling on a dual carriage way, shall upon the approach of a vehicle of the Fire Service or an approved police vehicle, stop as near as possible to either side of the road and during the hours of darkness, dip or dim its lights.

Meanwhile the traffic department said it has observed that drivers using the four-lane road between Plaisance on the East Coast Demerara to Kitty Public Road and on the East Bank Demerara between Mandela Avenue to Greenfield Park , were not complying with the laws.

To this end the police are reminding motorists of Section 46(1) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act Chapter 51:02 which warns against this.

That section states: “Every person or any road user who drives or propels any vehicles or is in charge of any animal when meeting or being overtaken by any other vehicle or animal as aforesaid shall keep his own vehicle or animal on the left or near side of the road.

“And when overtaking another vehicle or animal going in the same direction shall keep his own vehicle of animal on the right or offside, except in case of actual necessity or other sufficient reason or deviation.”

The police reiterated that all motorists should drive to the left of near side of the road.
