Dear Editor,

What message is given to visitors and the public to read in the newspaper that a family was dragged out of a taxi, beaten, stripped, robbed and two of the three females sexually assaulted. And just as horrible that no one interfered, called the police or provided assistance without being paid. The third outrage was that the attackers were able to go back to the club as if nothing happened.

This event adds to fears of overseas Guyanese thinking of visiting with their families as well as other tourists. It was reported that Irish newspapers and travel agents were warning of the Guyana crime situation. I say again, we need outside leadership in the police service as well as outside experts. We need to raise the pay for skilled and motivated people from the top to the bottom wherever we can recruit them. Without security, investments and progress lag. The government’s slow response to piracy shows again a tendency to accept slow progress and promises rather than action.

Yours faithfully,

(name and address supplied)
