The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said the water situation remains unchanged and low pressure will continue though there were reports yesterday of some amount of improvement in water delivery to various sections of the city.

Because of murky water getting into the Lamaha Canal from maintenance that was being done at the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC), the company had to cease processing water from that source. GWI has since been relying on its wells at the Shelter Belt for water, resulting in lower volumes and lower pressure as a consequence. Several persons residing in the city on Tuesday complained of severely low water pressure or no water at all for the entire day.

Works at the EDWC, which began during the dry season, have been suspended. The rains over the past few days have been blamed for turning the Lamaha Canal water murky.

Public Relations Officer at GWI Timothy Austin said yesterday that surveillance revealed that certain parts of the Lamaha Canal had clean water available. He said that GWI is in the process of now flushing the dirty water out of the canal.

“We hope that soon we will be able to take in the clean water,” Austin said, though cautioning that he couldn’t give a commitment as to when the situation would return to normal. He reassured residents of the city that the water they get through the taps is safe for consumption.
