Cops pick up ten men from Stabroek Market area

Police yesterday afternoon raided a section of the Stabroek Market detaining at least ten men who were then carried to the Brickdam Police Station.

It is not clear what the reason for the raid was and persons condemned the action saying that police had no right to detain the men. Comments like “Dem wrong, dem done search he and then gone with he in the vehicle”, and other such remarks were heard.

One of the detained men said he had just gone to the market to shop when the police picked him up. Others were calling to persons whom they knew, to send messages to their relatives. Persons around the area were heard questioning whether it was right that men going about their business could just be detained by the police.
