Couple choke-and-robbed in Regent Street

An elderly couple who appeared to be visitors were choked and robbed on Saturday night at the corner of Alexander and Regent Streets by two men who had accomplices lurking nearby.

An eye-witness to the robbery who wished to remain anonymous said the Caucasian couple were walking hand-in-hand east along Regent Street and were nearing Alexander when two men confronted them from behind.

According to the witness, there were a few other men hanging around on both streets who looked as though they were working with the two. After they were confronted, the woman fought with her attackers but was eventually overpowered.

The witness said the men then robbed the couple. The witness out of caution for his own safety retreated from the scene and called the police, and a patrol visited the area.

The incident happened around 8.10 pm and around 8.30 another police patrol was visible in the area near the infamous ‘drug yard’ in Alexander Street.
