Gunmen grab $800,000 from Bel Air businessman

Two motorcycle bandits yesterday made good their escape with some $800,000 after attacking a businessman at Bel Air Park.

According to a police release, around 14:20 hrs Vijai Kumar, 21, had just returned home after collecting the money from a city store. As he stopped his vehicle in front of his premises, the two men rode up on a motor cycle, held him at gunpoint and took away a bag with the money and escaped.

A relative who asked not to be identified told Stabroek News that the man operates an import and export business. The relative said that just as the car pulled up at the house, two men rode up with a CG motorcycle, jumped off and approached Kumar. Other relatives who were in the yard at the time were ordered to lie on the ground.

The relative told this newspaper that the gunman proceeded to ransack the car for the money himself. After finding the money which was under the car seat the men calmly went back to the motorcycle and sped away.

Meanwhile another relative said Kumar and his wife only arrived in the country last week.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene police were still at the home taking statements. This newspaper was told that Kumar’s business was attacked in a similar fashion on October 1, last year.
