The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has handed over an undisclosed sum of money to the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) to cover repairs for the ruptured Salbora Water Project destroyed by miners who ripped up a section of Mahdia road damaging the pipes in the process.

Acting Commissioner William Woolford made the disclosure recently but reserved comment on the exact amount.

The water distribution system supplied potable water to some 1,200 families in Mahdia and Campbell Town in Region Eight (Potaro/ Siparuni).

Some $50M was expended on the project and Hinterland Manager Gladwin Tait had explained to this newspaper that it was the main artery of the distribution network that was ruptured, interrupting the water supply to residents.

During dredging activities several stretches of the road were destroyed by gold and diamond miners in their hunt for minerals.

Woolford also told this newspaper that charges have already been filed against four of the errant miners but could not confirm when those matters would come up at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.

The mining operations responsible for the damage in the Region Eight community could also face legal action regarding the legitimacy of their mining operations there.
