Minister in the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand on Wednesday opened a twelve-week training programme for women, in Region Five.

A Government Inform-ation Agency press release said the women will be exposed to an education and skills training programme where they will be taught healthy eating habits, craft and home management skills. It is expected that the programme will empower them by helping them to understand themselves and to develop self-esteem. It will be held at the Farm/Zeskenderen multi-purpose centre. In her address, Manickchand said the “GWLI [Guyana Women's Leadership Institute] is here to give participants a chance to make something of their lives so that they can improve in many ways.” The minister said women have a big role to play in the development of the country and urged them to make choices that will make a positive impact on society. She also pleaded with them to be more vigilant about stamping out domestic abuse in their homes and communities. Since its establishment, the Women’s Affairs Bureau at the ministry has been instrumental in drafting policy documents and implementing programmes to protect and empower women. One major initiative was the establishment of GWLI which now serves as one of the pivotal agencies through which women are trained in areas of empowerment and decision-making.

GWLI programmes are also extended to the hinterland and riverain communities through the Regional Women’s Affairs Committees.

his agency offers a range of services including counselling on matters of domestic violence and other social problems affecting women and young girls.

Manickchand also hosted interactive sessions with several communities including No.10 Village and the Broken Water Land. Regional Chairman, Harrinarine Baldeo, Regional Executive Officer Floyd France and other officials also attended the opening.
