US couple now living here remanded on gun, ammo charges

A couple who recently returned from the US to live in Guyana and was allegedly found with a pistol along with seven bullets at a home was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Feizal Khan, 35, and Gloria Khan, 36, of 146 Block X Diamond, East Bank Demerara were not required to plead to two unlawful possession charges when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on October 6 at Georgetown they had in their possession one .38 Taurus pistol along with four rounds of .38 ammunition and three rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

Attorney-at-law Pamela DeSantos represented the couple. She told the court that her clients are American citizens who came into the country to live on May and June of this year respectively. She added that they rented an apartment with their two sons, ages four and six, and on the day in question a party of policemen went to the home and into a room where they allegedly found the items. The attorney stated that the number two defendant is pregnant and requested bail.

Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail saying that the police conducted a search on the entire building and found the weapons in a container in a bedroom.

The magistrate refused bail and transferred the case to Court Two for October 12.
