Police are still on the hunt for a gunman who was one of two who opened fire on a businessman and his son as they arrived at their Lamaha Gardens home early Monday morning.

Following the incident, which appeared to be a robbery attempt, police have increased their presence in the area. Stabroek News was told last evening that no move has been made to secure the deserted and unlit plot of land where the men were hiding prior to the attack.

Businessman Henry Rambarran and his son had just returned to their home from a wake around 12:40 am when two men jumped the fence on the southern side of the house and opened fire on them. Rambarran who is a licensed firearm holder returned fire hitting one of the men, Shawn Edwards, 30 years of East Ruimveldt, in his chest. Edwards was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The other man fled the scene even as his wounded accomplice lay bleeding and crying for help on the southern parapet of Garnett Street.

Police arrived promptly on the scene and a search of the area where the wounded gunman was, unearthed a Luger Tech 9 machine gun with 29 matching rounds.

Police had said in a press release that Edwards was on bail in a narcotics matter.

The car that the Rambarrans were in came under fire from the gunmen and a bullet pierced the bottom of the front windscreen and there were bullet marks on the roof and side of the vehicle. And at least three shells were recovered from the scene.

The Rambarrans had pointed out to this newspaper that the derelict building next door was the problem since it harbours persons of questionable character. Despite several reports to the police nothing has been done about this matter.
