Defence attorneys for Ashanti Schultz who is accused of murdering a hospital porter during a shooting melee on Main Street argued for and received additional witnesses’ statements as the second witness testified.

The preliminary inquiry into the murder is taking place before Magistrate Oneidge Walrond-Allicock at Court Six of the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Police prosecutor Hugh Winter handed over three statements to Schultz’s attorney Nigel Hughes which the magistrate the week before had ruled should be given over to the defence.

Detective Inspector Ludovick Scotland was called as the prosecution’s second witness and under cross-examination he noted that some witnesses that he took statements from were in the courtroom. He pointed out that they should not be there.

The prosecutor indicated that he was not planning on calling those persons who were in court.

After this disclosure, Hughes questioned why the defence was only given three statements when it appeared other witnesses had given statements in favour of Schultz. He stated that it seemed that the prosecutor had evidence which he chose not to disclose.

Winter responding stated that he sought legal advice before he served the three statements.

The magistrate then ruled that he should also hand over copies of those witnesses’ statements to the defence. The statements were then photocopied and handed over to Hughes and Mark Waldron.

The PI started last week with the testimony of police constable Kenton De Younge.

Schultz is charged with murdering hospital porter Kenrick Nero.

The case will continue today.
