Minibus driver remanded over schoolboy fatality

A minibus driver who allegedly hit down a schoolboy who was crossing Croal Street on Wednesday was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys.

Sherwin Alleyne of 149 Guyhoc Park was not required to plead to causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on October 17 at Croal Street he drove minibus BJJ 5833 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Andre Robertson. It was reported that Robertson of Lot 1602 Cadet Street, South Ruimveldt, a second form student at St. Mary’s Secondary School, was hit by a minibus as he was crossing the road. According to reports, the schoolboy was walking across the road when the ‘green man’ traffic light symbol appeared to indicate that pedestrians should cross and he was struck down by the minibus which had ignored the red light.

Attorney-at-law Randolph Kirton represented Alleyne and he requested bail for his client saying that the man had no previous traffic convictions and he intends to return to court.

The case was transferred to Court Seven for October 25.
