Toshaos and senior councillors from more than 100 Amerindian communities are expected to participate at a training session during the one-week National Toshaos Conference slated to begin tomorrow.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the participants will be trained in regional governance, among other areas, to ensure village leaders have the necessary skills to effectively execute their duties. Toshaos will be trained to conduct the duties of rural constables and justices of the peace. They will also be involved in the formulation of draft village regulations while the Toshaos’ representative to the Indigenous People’s Commission will be nominated.

The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs Toshaos’ conference titled ‘Building Capacity for Good Governance’ is intended to bolster the capacity of Amerindian communities and in particular the leaders of these communities.
