A man who allegedly robbed two women at Republic Park and was shot by the police after he attempted to disarm an officer was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.

Compton Codrington, 24, of Mocha, East Bank Demerara was not required to plead to two counts of robbery under arms and intent to prevent lawful apprehension when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on September 27 at Republic Park while being armed with a cutlass he robbed Sursattie Mangar of two cellular phones, one handbag and $5,860 cash. On October 2 at the same village he is accused of robbing Joan Fischer of one shoulder bag, a cellular phone and $30,000 cash while being armed with an ice pick. On the same date he is accused of assaulting Earle Bedlow, Special Constable of police in the line of duty with intent to prevent lawful apprehension.

According to a police press release, a 52-year-old woman who works as a domestic at a residence in Republic Park, was reportedly robbed of cash and jewellery at Republic Park on October 2, 2007. Police said that she saw the suspect, Codrington in Republic Park subsequently and pointed him out to an armed police rank. The release said that in efforts to arrest him, a scuffle ensued between the police rank and Codrington who attempted to disarm the police rank and was shot twice in his right forearm and once in his left hand.

The magistrate remanded Codrington until Friday.
