A 35-year-old minibus driver who allegedly caused the death of another man by driving in a dangerous manner was granted bail when he appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Hafiz Haroun of Lot 266 De Willem, West Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 by Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

It is alleged that on January 20 on the Timehri Public road, he drove minibus BHH 7556 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Abdool Hassan.

Reports are that at about 11:30 pm that day, Haroun was proceeding south when on approaching the Timehri Police station he lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Hassan was injured in the incident and he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and treated and sent away. However, he was later taken back to the hospital and admitted and later died there. The police were informed and following investigations, Haroun was arrested and charged.

Attorney-at-law Subas Ganesh appeared for Haroun and in a bail application stated that his client was 35 years old, lives at 266 De Willem South, is married and has four children. He further said that his client had no previous convictions and asked that bail be granted.

Bail was granted and Haroun ordered to return to court on December 4 at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
