A 58-year-old woman who allegedly fed her husband small doses of poison until he died was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Gem George, of 111 Meadowbrook, and a mother of four was not required to plead to the capital offence when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court. She has been accused of murdering her husband Aubrey Eastman on November 1.

Stabroek News was told yesterday that the woman allegedly mixed poison into the man’s meals then gave it to him. He then suddenly fell ill and was admitted to the Woodlands Hospital where he later died. After his death, the police received information about the woman’s alleged sinister plot and she was arrested and charged.

Attorney-at-law Zafar Mohamed entered an appearance for George on behalf of Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos. Mohamed said George works as a security guard.

The Magistrate later said that George is charged with a non-bailable and as such she will have to remain in custody.

George returns to Court Three on November 23.
