Police did not torture Buxtonians – Greene

Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene yesterday said that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) did not torture the two Buxtonians who had levelled accusations against officers, and that the force would meet fire with fire when it encountered gunmen.

It was the first time that Greene had spoken publicly on the torture accusations after refusing to comment on the matter when approached previously by members of the media. Stabroek News was told that the police had nothing to do with the beating of Patrick Sumner and Victor Jones and that it was members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who had tortured the men. The GDF has said that it will investigate the allegations.

Speaking at Eve Leary yesterday to announce the police annual Christmas security plan, Greene said that the police force is not about brutality and torture but “if the police come to arrest anyone they have to use some degree of force.” He also said “When we come under fire we shall return fire with fire
