WPO setting three-year programme at congress

The Women’s Progressive Organization (WPO) is hosting its 15th Triennial Congress at the Bath Primary School today and tomorrow with a view to identifying a framework to guide its programme of activities for the next three years.

The congress being held under the theme, “Empowering women to become equal partners in the development process of Guyana,” will draw representatives from local and international women’s organizations, the PPP and the PYO. Senior government officials as well as other stakeholders are also expected to attend.

According to a press release from the WPO, the women’s arm of the PPP, representatives from the Federation of Cuban Women and the Women’s International Democratic Federation are expected to attend. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, former president and WPO President Janet Jagan, and PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar are among the speakers.

The agenda includes the reading of the central committee report; the election of central committee members and a rally in observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Workshops will also be held to discuss topics such as women in decision making and development; addressing gender related problems and improving women’s education.

It is expected that each workshop would identify five key recommendations that are considered significant to the participants that will be submitted to the congress and subsequently used to guide the focus of the organization in the future.

A cultural segment and a display of handicraft items are also planned. The exhibition is expected to provide opportunities for the groups to obtain markets for their products.
