Naamryck farmers get $74M all-weather road

An $74.6M all-weather road has been constructed under the Poor Rural Communities Support Services Project (PRCSSP) of the Ministry of Agriculture for farmers in Naamryck, East Bank Essequibo, a Government Information Agency (GINA) release has said.

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud met farmers last Saturday and commissioned the road while urging residents to ensure that they maintain it.

The new road allows farmers in the area to transport their produce to the market and reduces post-handling losses incurred in the past.

The release said further that Minister Persaud indicated that his ministry is working with farmers on several projects and would like them to develop their own nursery in the area with which the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) would assist.

According to the release, the PRCSSP is working to alleviate poverty in Regions Two and Three by increasing poor rural household incomes through the expansion of on-farm production and fostering the promotion of rural micro-enterprises. The project is expected to benefit some 65 households.

Persaud also visited Canals Polder to inspect ongoing drainage works; he met farmers and discussed issues affecting them in those areas.
