A 22-year-old motorcyclist died on Tuesday following an accident on the Number 77 Public Road when he fell and struck his head after knocking down two pedestrians.

According to police reports, Chandradat Persaud of Number 79 Village, was taken to the Skeldon Hospital in an unconscious state suffering head injuries. He was immediately transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he died shortly after.

Stabroek News understands that at about 7.20 pm, Persaud and pillion rider Tameshwar Chetram, 15, also of Number 79 Village, were travelling south on the eastern side of the road when Persaud lost control of the bike, hit the pedestrians and fell off. The pedestrians – 19-year-old Arita Hunte of Number 77 Housing Scheme and Tysiah Greaves, 21, of 34 Scottsburg, Corentyne, were admitted to the Skeldon Hospital and treated for minor injuries. They were discharged yesterday.

Traffic Chief of ‘B’ Division John Daniels said Persaud was unlicensed and that neither he nor Chetram were wearing helmets at the time. He opined that Persaud might not have sustained life-threatening injuries had he been wearing a helmet. Daniels said this is one reason why police urge motorcyclists to wear their helmets at all times.
