Police interview witness in Merai case – AFC

The investigations into allegations of misconduct against Senior Superintendent Steve Merai have advanced with the interviewing of a key witness, the Alliance For Change (AFC) said it had been reliably informed.

In a statement, the AFC said the nation should be given an update and explanation about why the investigation had been dragging on for months. The party said the rule of law must be applied equally both to civilians and to police officers as justice delayed was justice denied.

In June, Merai had admitted that a voice heard in a taped conversation demanding money from an alleged drug dealer to settle an issue was his. The officer had claimed that he was working undercover but that none of his superior officers knew of this.

Initial reports had said the Guyana Police Force was in receipt of a copy of the recording and a transcript. Recently when questioned on the issue, Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene said a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

The AFC statement said too it was concerned about public safety and security at this time of the year. The party said there had been too many reports of unsolved crimes, especially robberies, in which the perpetrators disappeared leaving no trace that would lead to their arrest and conviction.
