Niko’s Jewellery now certified to national standards

Niko’s Jewellery establishment at 133 Church Street, Georgetown now has a permit to use the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) standards mark on its gold articles.

Niko’s Jewellery was issued the permit after meeting the requirements in the two national standards for jewellery – the marking requirements and the specification for gold articles – guidelines for manufacturing, alloying and testing, GNBS stated in a press release.

It noted that being certified means that all gold jewellery manufactured by Niko’s Jewellery would be labelled with the karat content and the manufacturer’s code or identification mark and the national standards mark.

The permit was handed over to proprietor Andy Williams by Dr Chatterpaul Ramcharran, GNBS Executive Director, and it is valid for one year from the date of issue and then it would have to be renewed.

There are now four jewellers certified under the national standards mark scheme.

According to the release, pieces at the jeweller’s sales outlet and at the place of manufacture will have to undergo periodic tests to ensure compliance with the national standards. As part of the certification process, officers of the GNBS would routinely conduct audits of the establishment to ensure that all requirements are continuously met.

Jewellers that have joined the product certification scheme and are currently using the standards mark would derive numerous benefits, the release said. These include the continuous implementation of good manufacturing practices, consistent quality gold jewellery and increased consumer confidence that would bring about increased sales.

The GNBS also routinely promotes certified companies under the GNBS Product Certification Scheme.

The GNBS said further that “it is ready and willing to work with all jewellers and goldsmiths who would like to get onboard the Product Certification Scheme since being a part of this scheme would encourage good manufacturing practices and protect consumers from dishonest practices such as under-karating.”

Meanwhile, GNBS is urging consumers to buy quality gold jewellery from any of the following certified establishments: Niko’s Jewellery, Kings Jewellery World, Steve’s Jewellery and De Abreu’s Creations.
